In Tuhfetü’l-Kibar, Katip Çelebi emphasizes the importance of the sciences of history, geography, and astronomy, explaining that those who govern the state must have a thorough understanding of their own imperial borders and the foreign countries located within those regions. Furthermore, he notes that it was thanks to the value Europeans placed on these sciences that they discovered America (known as the New World) and seized the ports of India. As the last work written by Katip Çelebi and the first book printed by the Müteferrika Press, Tuhfetü’l-Kibar is the first source written on the history and organization of the Ottoman navy.
