Studies on the written sources of Islamic-Turkish cultural history concerning education and social life continue to increase today. It is clearly evident both in the Qur’ān and in the hadiths of the Prophet that education and learning were among the foremost priorities for Islamic society. Published as a contribution to studies in this field, Tarîku’l-edeb, written by Ali b. Hüseyin el-Amâsî, is a work written in the Ottoman realm during the reign of Mehmed II, at a date corresponding to the conquest of Istanbul. Tarîku’l-edeb, which may be characterized as a book of âdâb and âdâb-ı muâşeret, consists of a mukaddime, twenty-seven fasıl, and a hatime. In addition to its treatment of the educational and instructional life of its period, the rules of âdâb-ı muâşeret, and various aspects of social life, Tarîku’l-edeb also contains basic ilmihal knowledge concerning religious life that every Muslim should know.
