Nizâmü’l-Edviye is a “compendium” written during the classical Ottoman period that focuses on “single remedies.” Within the ancient medical tradition, in which treatment was largely carried out using single remedies of plant, animal, and mineral origin, compendia that introduce these remedies hold an important place. One of the most comprehensive original works written in this field, Nizâmü’l-Edviye was authored in the 17th century by Sakızlı İsa Efendi, the chief physician of his time. It stands out from its counterparts due to its volume, the comprehensive information it provides on remedies, and its inclusion of the equivalents of remedy names in various Eastern and Western languages.
