In the 3rd century AH, when the most prolific and original works on science and art emerged in the Islamic world, İbnü’l-Heysem (d. 1040) authored works in the fields of geometry, physics, astronomy, and especially optics. The translation into Turkish of his work eş-Şukûk alâ Batlamyus, which aims to convey İbnü’l-Heysem’s scientific persona and methodology to modern readers, represents a significant contribution to the Turkish literature, both for the information it provides about that period and for the light it sheds on İbnü’l-Heysem’s work. In this book, İbnü’l-Heysem critiques the planetary models of Batlamyus, who was considered an authority in astronomy, and pioneers a reevaluation of those models and theories. Prepared by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatma Zehra Pattabanoğlu, Dr. Ahmed Nureddin Kattan, and Zehra Akkuş, this book, which includes an analysis, a critical edition, and a translation of Ibn al-Haytham’s eş-Şukûk alâ Batlamyus, presents today’s readers with one of the scientific examples of our ancient heritage. Thanks to the tradition of criticism, known as the “şukûk geleneği”, which began systematically with İbnü’l-Heysem in the history of Islamic astronomy, Nasîrüddin et-Tûsî, Urdî, İbnü’ş Şâtır, and their successors were able to avoid the contradictions in Batlamyus’s work and direct their efforts toward reconstructing the organization of the universe. It was precisely these corrections, techniques, and alternative models that laid the foundations for the new astronomy (Copernican astronomy).
