Great Support from ERC to TÜBA-GEBİP Member Assoc. Prof. Somel’s “NEOGENE Project”
The European Research Council (ERC) provided 2.5 million euros to 2015 TÜBA-GEBİP Member and METU Department of Biology Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. Mehmet Somel’s scientific project “NEOGENE”, which included the emergence and spread of the neolithic lifestyle.
Prof. Somel’s 5-year project titled as “NEOGENE: Archaeogenomic analysis of genetic and cultural interactions in Neolithic Anatolian societies” is the only project in Turkey that is taken support in 329 projects accepted all Europe within the scope of the ERC Consolidator Grant 2017.
Archaeologists, biologists and anthropologists work in close partnership with the project conducted by Mehmet Somel. NEOGENE team hopes to reveal the contribution of human migration and information exchange and cultural interaction to the spread of life and agriculture in Anatolia by evaluating DNA analyzes and archaeological data together. The goal is to understand the true story of one of the most important turning points in human history.
