TÜSEB Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar Incentive Award to TÜBA Young Academy Member Dr. Gür

The 2023 Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar Science, Service and Incentive Award of the Presidency of the Health Institutes of Türkiye (TÜSEB), given in the name of Academy Honorary Member and Nobel Laureate Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar, was awarded to TÜBA Young Academy Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mert Gür. Dr. Gür. Dr. Gür was in the University of Pittsburgh to conduct academic studies in the Department of Computational Biology and Systems Biology as a visiting associate professor of Istanbul Technical University (ITU), and was unable to attend the ceremony. ITU Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Lütfiye Durak Ata received the award on his behalf.

The program opened with the speeches of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Türkiye, Prof. Dr. Erhan Akdoğan, President of TÜSEB, and the health ministers of the guest countries. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan congratulated the scientists with a video message and the awards were presented to them at a ceremony held at the 9th Turkish Medical World Congress.  Prof. Dr. Yavuz Nuri Ertaş from Erciyes University, Dr. Assist. Prof. Dr. Levent Beker from Koç University, Dr. Serkan Belkaya from İhsan Doğramacı University, Dr. Prof. Dr. Serkan Belkaya from İhsan Doğramacı University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Neslihan Üstündağ Okur from Health Sciences University and ITU Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mert Gür.

Who is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mert Gür?
He was born in 1983 in Hamburg. He received his BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering from METU in 2006 and his PhD degree in Computational Science and Engineering from Koç University in 2010. Dr. Gür has more than 16 years of experience in biomolecular simulation and modeling at various top academic and research institutions in Türkiye and the US, including the University of Pittsburgh (University of Pittsburgh-Pitt), UC Berkeley, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, and has published more than 30 papers in prestigious journals such as Nature, Science and Nature Communications. His main research interests are Computational Structural Biology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Medicine and Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Gür has been involved in 18 different projects funded by Türkiye, USA and EU. At ITU, he served as the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Deputy Director of the Institute of Science and Technology. He gave 42 lectures in total to more than 2,500 students at ITU and also gave and continues to give many lectures abroad, including undergraduate courses at Pitt Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Department and graduate programs at Pitt Medical School. He has won many outstanding achievement awards and scholarships such as TÜBA GEBİP, Science Academy BAGEP, TÜBİTAK National Leading Researcher and TÜSEB Incentive. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mert Gür, a faculty member of ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, continues his academic studies as a visiting associate professor in the Department of Computational Biology and Systems Biology at Pitt School of Medicine, where he was appointed by ITU.
