"Turkish Culture Research and Technology Award" to TÜBA Principal Member Prof. Dr. Feridun Emecen

TÜBA Principal Member and Dean of the Faculty of Arts at İstanbul 29 Mayıs University, Dr. Feridun Emecen was given the 2014 Turkish Culture Research Award "for the researches that he has done for the Turkish culture and history and for his contribution to academic life with his students".

Organized by the Elginkan Foundation and held for the 9th time this year in order to uncover and promote research in the field of Turkish Culture and technology "Turkish Culture Research and Technology Awards" found their owners. In addition to TÜBA Principal Member Prof. Feridun Emecen, Prof. Dr. Özdemir Nutku and Lecturer Süleyman Şenel were given the award in Turkish Cultural Research as well. In Technology Category, Associate Prof. Dr. Bahattin Koç who produced artificial tissues and organs with 3D Bio-printer, and Prof. Dr. İbrahim Akduman and Asst. Assoc. Dr. Mehmet Çayör received awards for their apparatus for early detection and display of breast cancer.

Who is Prof. Dr. Feridun Emecen?

He graduated from the Istanbul University Faculty of Literature, History Department of Early Modern History in 1979. He attended the Chair of Modern History in 1981 as an assistant. In 1985 his doctoral thesis on elucidating the social and economic history of Manisa region in the XVI century was accepted. In 1987 he was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Modern History. He became Associate Professor in 1989. In 1995 he was appointed as a professor in the same Department. Between 1994 and 2000 he worked as the Assistant Dean of Istanbul University and between 2006 and 2007 he held the Eurasian Institute of Management. Since 16 March 2012, he has been the Dean at Faculty of Arts, İstanbul 29 Mayıs University.

Participating in numerous domestic and abroad scientific conferences and symposia, he took part in many scientific journals’ publication boards, advisory boards, became a member of the Turkish Historical Society in 1995 and became a principal member of the Academy of Sciences of Turkey in 2012. Emecen’s published books and articles cover the topics such as Ottoman bureaucracy, dynasty, history of the city, social structure, political orientations, Ottoman-European relations, the war history of the Ottoman Balkans and the Middle East world.
