TÜBA Young Academy Member Dr. Gürcan Receives Two Important Awards

TÜBA Young Academy Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Efe Can Gürcan was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award in Political Economy by the World Association of Political Economy (WAPE). WAPE presented the "Outstanding Achievement Award in Political Economy" to Istinye University Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gürcan at the 16th WAPE Forum held in Fuzhou, China between September 25 and 27 with the theme of modernization.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Efe Can Gürcan also received an award for his contributions to Turkish-Chinese relations at the 4th Türkiye-China Communication Forum organized by China International Broadcasting Group (CICG), together with Yunus Emre Institute President Prof. Dr. Şeref Ateş. On September 18th, Serdar Çam, Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism, Liu Shaobin, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Ankara, and Gao Anming, Vice President of China International Communications Group (CICG) attended the Türkiye-China Communication Forum held in Istanbul.

Who is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Efe Can Gürcan?
Efe Can Gürcan received his Bachelor's degree in International Relations from Koç University in 2009, his Master's degree in International Studies from the University of Montreal in 2011, and his PhD from Simon Fraser University in 2018.

Between 2015 and 2019, he worked as a lecturer at Simon Fraser University School of International Studies and Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Since 2019, he has served as vice dean and head of the department within the Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences at Istinye University. In 2021, he worked as a visiting scholar at Shanghai University Institute of Global Studies.

Assoc. Prof. Gürcan has authored 5 books and dozens of scientific articles with at least 1105 citations (h-index=17). Having received many important scholarships and research support such as A Category Joseph-Armand Bombardier, Assoc. Prof. Gürcan was honored with the Albert Szymanski award by the American Sociological Association in 2014, Emerald Literati and TÜBA Outstanding Young Scientist Award in 2021, and "Outstanding Achievement Award in Political Economy" by the World Association for Political Economy (WAPE) in 2023.

Gürcan, who continues to serve as the Director of Belt and Road Studies Application and Research at Istinye University and the Editorial Board Coordinator of the Belt & Road Initiative Quarterly magazine, has been working as a Research Fellow at the Geopolitical Economy Research Center at the University of Manitoba since 2019. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Turkish Martyrs' Cemetery Reconstruction Foundation and a member of the Advisory Board of the Çanakkale Wars Institute. In 2023, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gürcan was admitted to the country with the reference of the British Academy and continues his studies as a Senior Visiting Researcher at the London School of Economics and the University of Nottingham, representing Istinye University.
