TÜBA Principle Member Prof. Dr. Necati Örmeci was Elected as an APASL Board of Directors Member

TÜBA Principle Member Prof. Dr. Necati Örmeci was elected as a member on the Asia Pacific Associated Study of Liver (APASL) Board of Directors. Prof. Dr. Örmeci was also appointed as the conference chairman at the APASL Single Topic conference to take place in September of 2016.

The General Conference organized in a different country each year by APASL, one of the three large organizations in the world on liver diseases, took place in Istanbul on March 12-15 with the participation of 4500 people. From among the applicants to APASL, with members from 90 different countries, who applied with their scientific activities and background, TÜBA Principle Member Prof. Dr. Necati Örmeci was elected to both board membership and scientific chairman of this year’s conference.

The APASL Board of Directors, which is formed by 10 members, elected Prof. Dr. Necati Örmeci in place of another member whose two year term was completed and also decided for him to be the chairman at the APASL Single Topic Conference to take place in September of 2016. At the conference, which will take place in Istanbul with an expected 1000 participants, some of the most important headings in liver diseases: Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and Hepatitis Delta will be discussed.

Stating that the Single Topic Conference Chairmanship is a great honor, Prof. Dr. Necati Örmeci said “It is very important that our country is introduced in this conference both from scientific and cultural aspects. 9 countries applied for the single topic conference in 2016 but it was decided to be held in Istanbul. It will be our greatest goal to represent our country in the best possible way”.

Who is Prof. Dr. Necati Örmeci?

After completing the Ankara University Medical Faculty in 1976 he started working in the same year as an assistant in the Ankara University Medical Faculty Internal Medicine Specialty Branch. He became an Internal Medicine Specialist in 1980. After completing his military duty he started out as an assistant in the Ankara University Medical Faculty Gastroenterology Specialty Branch in May of 1983. In 1985 he became a Gastroenterology Specialist and was appointed as an assistant associate professor to the Gastroenterology Department. He achieved the MONBUSHO Scholarship offered by the Japanese Government and worked on diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound between October 1985 and December 1986 at the Tokyo Women’s Medical College Hospital. In 1988 he became an associate professor of Gastroenterology. In July of 1990 he attended an “Advanced ERCP course” in England. In 1990 he won the TÜBİTAK scholarship and worked on stomach cytology and histopathology and diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy at the Tokyo National Cancer Center. In April of 1994 he became a professor. He has around 140 articles published in national and international journals as well as chapters in 9 different books and has presented reports in many national and international conferences. He has served as a chairman in national conferences. In 1999 he won the Behçet Disease Research Award, in 2006 at the Asian Pacific Associated Study of Liver Diseases meeting (APASL) in Manila he won the “Treatment Method Award” with his presentation on the “Örmeci Method” in Hydatic Cysts of the Liver. He was elected as a TÜBA Principle Member in 2012.
