TÜBA Principle Member Prof. Dr. Mustafa Ersöz was Elected to COST Scientific Committee Membership

TÜBA Principle Member and Selçuk University Science Faculty Chemistry Department Teaching Staff Member Prof. Dr. Mustafa Ersöz was elected as a member of the COST Scientific Committee at the Senior Level Representatives Meeting of the European Cooperation in Science and Technology – COST, after being nominated by TÜBİTAK.

COST, for which the scientific coordination in Turkey is provided by TÜBİTAK, was established in 1971 to provide coordination at a European level for research projects that are supported with national resources and to support the joint work of European scientists; and operates with the mission of reinforcing scientific and technical research for peaceful objectives by supporting interaction and cooperation between European researchers.

The COST Scientific Committee advises the COST High Level Representatives Committee on the selection and execution of COST projects, advancing the European Research Field on a global level, conducting scientific excellence in Europe, providing contributions to scientific and technical activities and supporting the European research community in the possible way.

As a cooperation program that has been continuing in scientific cooperation for the longest period and comprises the European Research Field, COST also aims to develop interaction and cooperation with researchers in countries beyond the EU like America, Australia, New Zealand and Russia. While the participation of our researchers in COST has increased in recent years TÜBİTAK has been working diligently to make this increase occur across all COST projects. By participating in COST and getting researchers from our country included directly in this international cooperation network provides opportunities to form a basic structure and consortium for the Horizon 2020, in which our country is included, and to participate in this consortium.

Prof. Ersöz, who explained that due to Turkey’s geopolitics and strategic location, it has an important place in the heart of Afro-Eurasian geography, where a significant portion of historical accumulations and international developments occur, said that especially because of the roles they have undertaken on an international scale and the tangible contributions they have made, academic cooperation networks need to be established with the Islamic Cooperation Organization and the Central Asian Turkic Republics, joint scientific policies need to be developed and a structure similar to COST needs to be formed with Turkey leading this structure.

Within the mission of COST Prof. Dr. Mustafa Ersöz undertook active duties such as Core group membership in the COST project, task group chairman and Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSM) coordinator. Due to his international work in the field of nanoscience, Prof. Ersöz has served as the coordinator in the “Nanomaterials and Nanotechnologies” team to prepare a project in the field of nanotechnology within the scope of the HORIZON 2020 under the COST-MP1106 action. Prof. Ersöz was in the same consortium (FP7-LAMAND) as some important research centers in the field of nanotechnology and Intel in the scope of the EU 7. Framework Program and conducted the leadership of the “Nanometrology” work package of the project. He continues to carry out many projects in the scope of the EU 7. Framework Program.

Prof. Ersöz established the Selçuk University’s R&D center laboratory infrastructure to coordinate and integrate the R&D activities in the university and contribute to the development of R&D needs for the industry of Konya. Also he continues the “Natural Products Research and Application” project to utilize the natural products of the Konya region as technological added value products in the scope of university-industry cooperation.
