TÜBA Member Prof. Mandal Appointed as ITU Rector
Since 2018, TÜBA Full Member Prof. Hasan Mandal, who has been serving as the President of TÜBİTAK, has been appointed as the Rector of Istanbul Technical University (ITU).
Who is Prof. Hasan Mandal?
He was born in 1965 in Eskişehir. He received his bachelor's degree from METU, Department of Metallurgical Engineering in 1987 and his PhD degree from Newcastle University, UK in 1992. He conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Newcastle, England in 1992-1994 and at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany with the Alexander Humboldt Scholarship in 1997-1998.
In 1994, he started to work as an assistant professor at Anadolu University, Department of Ceramic Engineering. He was promoted to associate professor in 1996 and professor in 2001. Prof. Mandal, whose more than 140 publications, 70 of which are published in SCI journals, have been cited over 1200 times, has also been the owner of 6 international patents.
He has received various national and international awards, including the TÜBİTAK Science Award. Prof. Hasan Mandal, who is a member of TÜBA, World Academy of Ceramics (WAC) and European Academy (AE), served as the Director of Research and Graduate Policies at Sabancı University between 2011-2015 and as the Vice Rector of Sabancı University since January 2012. In 2015, he was appointed as a Member of the Council of Higher Education. In the same year, he was elected as a member of the Executive Board of the Council of Higher Education, and in 2016, he was elected as the Vice President of the Council of Higher Education. He served as the Vice Rector of Sabancı University. In 2018, he was appointed as the President of TÜBİTAK and a member of the Presidential Science, Technology and Innovation Policies Board, and then elected as the vice chairman of the board and a member of the Council of Higher Education in 2019.
Since 2020, Prof. Mandal has been a member of the Governing Council of the United Nations Technology Bank for Least Developed Countries (UNTB) and was appointed President of TÜBİTAK for the second time in 2022. In 2022, he was elected as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the World Association of Industrial and Technological Research Organizations (WAITRO). In 2023, Prof. Hasan Mandal was among the top 2% of the “World's Most Influential Scientists” list published by Stanford University in the Elsevier database.
