TÜBA Member Prof. Dr. Öniş Elected as a Member of the Academia Europaea

Prof. Dr. Ziya Öniş, an Honorary Member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) and a faculty member at Koç University, has been elected a Member of the Academia Europaea.

In a selection process that evaluates not only academic excellence but also lasting contributions to the global scientific community, Prof. Dr. Öniş was deemed worthy of membership for his work in political economy and globalization, which has created a broad sphere of influence, particularly through his studies on developing countries, state-capitalism relations, and global economic transformations.

Who is Prof. Dr. Ziya Öniş?
He served as Director of the Center for Globalization, Peace, and Democratic Governance (GLODEM) at Koç University (2010–2013) and as Director of the Institute of Social Sciences (2006–2009). Before joining the Department of International Relations at Koç University, he served as a faculty member in the Department of Economics at Boğaziçi University. His recent research focuses on the crisis of liberal democracy, the global populist wave, authoritarian backlashes and expectations of democratization, the “Post-Western” new order emerging after the liberal international order, the expansion processes of BRICS countries within the China-Russia axis, and the position of the Global South, Türkiye’s economic policy during the AKP era, new orientations in Turkish foreign policy, and the interactions between domestic and foreign policy. Prof. Dr. Öniş was elected a member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) in 2012 and has been awarded the TÜBİTAK Social Sciences Research Award and the Koç University Award for Excellence in Research. In 2020–2021, he received the Koç University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences Award for Excellence in Education; in 2023, he was awarded the Excellence Award as part of the 18th Kadir Has Awards; and in 2024, he was honored with the Koç University Outstanding Educator Award for the 2023–2024 academic year. In 2019, Prof. Öniş, along with Mustafa Kutlay, was a co-recipient of the Elizabeth Meehan Best Article Award for their paper published in the journal Government and Opposition. Prof. Dr. Ziya Öniş continues his work at the Department of International Relations at Koç University.
