TÜBA Honorary Member Prof. Dr. Sadık Kakaç was presented with the ‘Luikov Medal’…

TÜBA Honorary Member and the Union of Chambers and Commoditys Exchange of Turkey Economy and Technology University (TOBB ETÜ) Mechanical Engineering Department Teaching Staff Member Prof. Dr. Sadık Kakaç was awarded the ‘Luikov Medal’.

Prof. Dr. Sadık Kakaç is the first Turkish scientist to receive the Luikov Medal, which has been given to a total of 16 scientists from different countries throughout the world and organized once every two years by the International Communications in Heat and Mass Transfer-ICHMT.

Deemed deserving of the 2014 Luikov Medal by ICHMT for his significant contributions to the science of heat and mass transfer and developing the international cooperation in this field, Prof. Dr. Kakaç not only has many achievements in this field and books that are used in education throughout the world, but he has formulated an important parameter used by researchers in the mechanism of fluids which has been named the ‘Kakaç Number’.  

Who is Prof. Dr. Sadık Kakaç?
Born in Çorum in 1932 Sadık Kakaç graduated from the Machine Faculty at the Istanbul Technical University in 1955; in 1959 he studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Machine Engineering Department and in 1960 he received his S.M. degree in Nuclear Energy and doctorate at the University of Manchester. In 1967 he became an associate professor at the Istanbul Technical University (ITU) and a professor at the Middle Eastern Technical University (METU) in 1971.

Between 1960-1982 and 1998-1999 Sadık Kakaç taught at METU, in 1990-1991 he was a guest teacher at the Munich Technical University and in 1999 he retired from METU.

Playing an important role in the establishment of the ITU Nuclear Energy Institute in 1960 Sadık Kakaç was a member on the Atom Energy Council in 1970-1978 and was elected to the TÜBİTAK Science Council in 1971 to serve two terms. Sadık Kakaç also served as the Acting TÜBİTAK General Secretary in 1975-1976. In 1978-1980 Kakaç represented our country at the NATO Science Committee and during the same term served as the General Secretary of the Turkish Atom Energy Commission.

Also an Honorary Professor at China’s Shanghai Electrical Energy Institute, Xian Jiatong University Honorary Advisor, Russian Federation Academy of Sciences foreign member, Sadık Kakaç is the editor of scientific journals "International Journal of Hydrogen Energy", “International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer”, “International Communications in Heat and Mass Transfer” “International Journal Experimental Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics” and "International Journal of Thermal Sciences".

Winner of the Alexander von Humboldt Award (Germany) in 1989, The Turkish-American Scientists Association Science Award in 1994, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Heat Transfer Award in 1997, the 1997 International Center of Heat and Mass Transfer Service Award and the 1999 METU Prof. Dr. Mustafa N. Parlar Education and Research Foundation Service Award Sadık Kakaç was given an Honorary Doctorate in 1998 by Ovidius University (Romania) and by Reims University (France) in 1999. Sadık Kakaç is the TÜBİTAK Service Award recipient of the year 2000.

Having worked at the Miami University in 1982-2008 Prof. Dr. Sadık Kakaç was elected as a TÜBA Principle Member in 1999 and has been working at the TOBB Economy and Technology University since June 22, 2007.
