TÜBA Honorary Member Aziz Sancar Received His Award
TÜBA Honorary Member Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar, who won the 2015 Nobel Prize in the field of chemistry for his research mapping out how he repairs DNA with damaged cells and maintains their genetic information, received his award in a grand ceremony organized in Sweden’s capital, Stockholm, from the hands of the King of Sweden Carl Gustaf the 16th accompanied by Mozart’s Turkish March.
The ceremony and celebrations were also attended by TÜBA President Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cevat Acar, TÜBA Council Members Fahrettin Keleştimur, Prof. Dr. H. Tayfun Özçelik and TÜBA Principle Member Prof. Dr. Mehmet Öztürk. Academy President Prof. Dr. Acar said that Prof. Dr. Sancar’s winning the Nobel Prize was a great source of pride for all of us and added: “The fact that Professor Aziz is a member of our Academy and the first scientist to have won the Nobel Prize has amply honored and pleased our academic community, Turkish scientific world and the Turkish people, and has provided a source of motivation for all of us. Professor Aziz has not only set an example with his scientific discoveries and research, but become an important role model with his loyalty and devotion to the country and the people of Turkey. I want to express my most sincere congratulations and gratitude on behalf of myself and TÜBA to our valued professor and say how important I think it is in terms of motivation and the need for development amongst Turkish scientists and therefore Turkish science, to see our esteemed professor in Turkey as soon as possible.”
In the 2015 Nobel Prize Ceremony, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was shared by William Campbell from Ireland, Satoshi Omura from Japan and Youyou Tu from China. Takaaki Kajita and Arthur McDonald from Canada won the Nobel Prize in Physics. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry was shared by genetic scientist Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar who is continuing his research in the US, Tomas Lindahl from Sweden and Paul Modrich from the USA. Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar won the 2015 Nobel Prize in the field of chemistry for his research mapping out how he repairs DNA with damaged cells and maintains their genetic information. The Nobel Prize in Literature was won by Belarussian author Svetlana Aleksandrovna Alexievich and the Prize in Economics was given to British statistician Angus Deaton.
