'TÜBA-Food, Nutrition and the Prevention of Cancer Symposium' was Held

'TÜBA-Food, Nutrition and the Prevention of Cancer Symposium' organized by TUBA was held on May 23, 2015.

In the Symposium that was held at Ramada Hotel Elazığ TÜBA, TUBITAK, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, and faculty members of the specialized field of nutrition and cancer from the state and private universities, state hospitals and private hospitals, and also various associations and administrators attended the symposium sessions was held at five different titles. Selman Ayaz, Head of Department for Food, Agriculture and Livestock Ministry, Food Premises and Codex, made the presentation named as 'Food Regulation and Auditing in Our Country' in the 'Regulatory and Control' session headed by Prof. Dr. Bülent Zülfikar.

While 'Eating Habits and Cancer Relationship' chaired by Prof. Dr. Nur Olgun and Prof. Nur Dr. Ahmet Özet, Prof. Dr. Tanju Besler on 'Carcinogenesis and Immunity' and Prof. Dr. Hakan Akbulut on 'Nutrition and Cancer Relationship' have made a speech.

Ministry of Health, Head of the Department of Cancer Assoc. Dr. Murat Gültekin’s 'Obesity and Turkey Profile' , Prof. Dr. İlhan Satman’s 'Diabetes Obesity and Cancer' issues were discussed at the ‘Obesity and Cancer Relationship’ session that is chaired by Prof. Dr. Fahrettin Keleştemur and Prof. Dr. Celaletdin Camcı.

While the highly debated topic of recent days 'Food Preparation Techniques' session was chaired by TÜBA Principal Members Prof. Dr. Mustafa Solak and Prof. Dr. Kazim Şahin, the presentation about 'Regulation of GMOs' by Prof. Dr. Hakan Yardımcı, 'GMO, Benefits and Harms' presentation by TUBA Principal Member Dr. Fikret Sahin, ‘Food Additives from a Biochemist’s Perspective’ by TUBA Principal Member Prof Dr. Fatih Gültekin, "Food Additives Regulations' speech was made by Selman Ayaz.

At the press conference held at the end of the symposium, Academy President Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cevat Acar said "as Turkey's academy, we have set up working groups on our country’s priority issues and problems. Food and nutrition group was added to the previously existing working groups about stem cell and cancer. The main function of these working groups is to make science-based consultancy to the public, decision makers and scientific community. We held the workshops, symposium and meetings with this responsibility and bring the results into a report.” and he continued his speech by giving information about the TUBA.

Prof. Dr. Taner Demirer, stated that TÜBA was in need of holding this symposium according to TUBA’s mission on the increase of existing disinformation about this issue in the community and he continued:

"So far we could not say things clearly such as use this food, you can get rid of cancer thanks to these agents. Exercising, not eating fatty foods, obesity prevention, nutrition with mainly fruits and vegetables reduces cancer, now the whole world knows them. GMOs have also discussed at this meeting and carcinogenic effects have been not observed, but it should be followed up in the long term and it seems; it rose to the surface that media needs consultants such as expert pharmacists and vets. "

Prof. Dr. Kazim Şahin "ingredients that are effective in a cancer type, may not be effective in a other type of cancer. It is revealed that studies that were made about some of the materials are insufficient and mechanisms involved in these studies should work. TUBA undertook a major mission in this regard. It is quite important to organize symposiums and do similar works in order to enlighten the community and they must be continued."

Prof. Dr. Muzaffer Şeker, "Sharing the thread with the relevant partners, is also fulfilling the duty to correct the processes that are occurred in terms of disinformation of the community. One of the important self-criticisms that scientists should make; he/she should know the consequence of the speeches leads to what kind of problems in the community. "

Known for his studies in recent years on food additives, Prof. Dr. Fatih Gültekin said, "One of the foundations of a healthy diet is nutrition with food additive-free products. The food that we prepare by taking the yogurt on our slice of bread and spicing on top of it, is more precious and nourishing than any biscuits that we see in the market."
