TÜBA Engineering Terms Dictionary Has Been Opened to Online Access by Industry and Technology Minister Fikri Işık

Science, Industry and Technology Minister Fikri Işık made the opening speech at the 47th TÜBA General Assembly held in Ankara the Green Park Hotel and opened the TUBA Engineering Terms Dictionary for online use via the www.tubaterim.gov.tr address which is completed by the work of over two hundred scientists and includes about 30,000 terms of Engineering.

Minister Fikri Işık launched the webpage making the first search in the dictionary with the term 'thermodynamic'. He said "I would like to thank all our academicians and experts involved in the work of Engineering Terms Dictionary which is now opened for Internet access. I wish the dictionary will be beneficial for our country and the world of science." and presented a thank you plaque of the Academy to Prof. Dr. Bülent Sankur the Executive of Engineering Terms Dictionary.

"Online access is the final stage before printing"

TÜBA President Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cevat Acar stated “Within the scope of TÜBA Turkish Science Terms Dictionary Project that aims the development of Turkish as the language of science, Social Science Terminology Dictionary has been printed, Engineering Terms Dictionary has been completed and Natural Sciences Dictionary is about to reach the final stage of completion, the efforts for the Health Sciences Dictionary continues". After thanking the academicians and scientists who contributed to the emergence of the dictionary containing about 30,000 terms, Acar stated that opening the Engineering Terms Dictionary to the public for review and contributions via the web is the last stage before the work is published.

"Turkish vocabulary will expand fifty percent”

Executive of the Engineering Terms Dictionary Prof.  Dr. Bülent Sankar also said: "It is a work that went on for thirteen years and formed with the contribution of more than two hundred and fifty scientists. When creating this work, we attached importance to the transparency, adoptability and usability of the terms in education, and we aimed to put an end to the confusion regarding the terms and achieve the term unity. In the process, on the one hand, we benefited from the Turkish language’s fertility and sometimes we struggled with its defiles and I think this work will eventually become a gift for Turkey. Within the context of TÜBA Science Terms Dictionary Project, the sum of engineering and social sciences terms  totals fifty-five thousand and we expect this number to exceed one hundred thousand when the nature and medical terms soon to be published are added to this number. This also means vocabulary in the Turkish language increases fifty percent." and ended his words by thanking all those who contributed.

Engineering Terms Dictionary which was prepared under the TÜBA Turkish Science Terms Dictionary Project, was created by the joint efforts of scientists over two hundred and fifty for more than a decade. Composed of basic terms of the twenty-two engineering fields, the Engineering Terms Dictionary includes approximately 30,000 terms used in education and training, practices in industry and trading, publications, mentioned in regulation and research. With its scope, the dictionary will play an important role to reach unity in Turkish language and will be a reference for Turkish science and technology literature.

In the TÜBA Engineering Sciences Terms Dictionary, intelligibility, meaning transparency and adoptability features were given foreground and a large number of suggestions were put forward in order to change several foreign terms to Turkish. Each term is rigged with a short and concise encyclopaedic content and the dictionary was made more practical by providing all the synonyms in four languages. In the process of preparation of the dictionary, terms were treated repeatedly in various working groups and have been audited by independent experts while interactions and partnerships between fields were considered at the same time.

After contributions to the dictionary during the webcast, it is scheduled for publication in the first half of 2016.
