TÜBA Associate Member Prof. Dr. Kadir Mutlu Hayran was selected to the “World Health Organization Scientific Council”

TÜBA Associate Member and Head of Hacettepe University Cancer Institute Department of Preventive Oncology, Prof. Dr. Kadir Mutlu Hayran was elected to membership of the IARC Scientific Council by the World Health Organization- International Agency for Research on Cancer, IARC in the 57th Board session held in Lyon city in France between 13 and 14 May 2015.


Prof. Dr. Kadir Mutlu Hayran who was assigned for 4 years from 2015 to 2019 in the Scientific Council where each member country is represented by a scientist, made the following statement about having been selected as a member: "I am delighted to be nominated and elected to the IARC Scientific Council that is a reputable agency specialized in this area of the World Health Organization, for Preventive Oncology I had been working on for many years in the majors, which is one of the very important focuses of my career about prevention of cancer. I will try to contribute through the Council to the development of scientific and effective methods worldwide on cancer prevention, especially in the geography where our country is located and in the countries with similar socio-cultural characteristic.”

IARC, founded in 1965 with the decision taken at the 18th World Health Assembly is an agency of World Health Organization whose center is based in Lyon France. It is represented by 25 member states including Germany, France, United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Switzerland, Canada, the Russian Federation. IARC's mission is to provide protection from cancer by conducting research and guiding them. Among the working titles are the identification of cancer causes, determination of prevention methods, and accurate measurement of the global cancer burden through the organization of cancer registries worldwide, the creation of international partnerships for cancer research, the organization of training and certification programs and determining the global cancer control policy based on the evidence. 300 scientists from over 50 countries work in its Center and the works are directed and controlled through the two boards, the Board of Directors and the Scientific Council.

Who is Prof. Dr. Kadir Mutlu Hayran?

Prof. Dr. Kadir Mutlu Hayran received Doctor of Medicine and Master of Science of Cancer Epidemiology titles from Hacettepe University. Along with his main study issues, cancer prevention, general epidemiology, cancer epidemiology, clinical epidemiology and biostatistics, Prof. Hayran gained his Public Health Expertise by completing the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Public Health Department. He completed the certification programs for clinical research methods regarding epidemiology, biostatistics and cancer control organized by the World Health Organization, International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the United States National Cancer Institute (NCI), European Cancer Research and Treatment Organization (EORTC), US University of Michigan and the University of Pavia in Italy. He worked as a research fellow at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) in the Cancer Control and Prevention unit between 2001-2003. He participated as an instructor for various national and international certification programs including UNICEF, the NCI, and Cornell University. Recently, he has been taking part in the field works about community based tobacco control which is carried out in partnership with Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg Institute and the World Health Organization. In 2012 Prof. Dr. Kadir Mutlu Hayran was selected TÜBA Associate Member and he is still conducting his duties as the Head of HU Department of Preventive Oncology Cancer Institute, HU Clinical Research Ethics Committee Member and Rapporteur, Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Research Technical Support Coordinator and Chairman of the Ministry of Health National Cancer Advisory Board Member Department of Preventive Oncology Subcommittee.
