TÜBA Associate Member Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün was Appointed as the Rector of the Gebze Technical University
TÜBA Associate Member Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün was appointed as the Rector of the Gebze Technical University on November18.
According to the statement released by the Presidential Press Center; Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün was appointed as the Rector of the Gebze Technical University in accordance with the Constitution’s article 130 and article 13 of the Higher Education Law from among candidates recommended by the Higher Education Board.
After Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün was appointed to his position he made the following statement; “As of November 18, 2014 I have been appointed as the Rector of the Gebze Technical University by the courtesy of our Esteemed President for the 2014-2018 term.
On this occasion I would like to thank our rector Prof. Dr. Orhan Şahin, who served during the 2010-2014 term, for his contributions to our university.
I would first like to extend my gratitude to the valued staff members of our university who have deemed me deserving of this post with their support. You have given me strength and confidence with this outstanding support.
Throughout my term as Rector of Gebze Technical University, a task I shall be honored to fulfill, my team and I will work with awareness that to serve GTU with the support of our university’s academic and administrative staff is to serve our country and we will work with all our strength to be a university that meets all needs, maintains a competitive edge and is open to change and improvement. In all the work we will be doing our main philosophy will be to strive towards the extents of our strength intersecting with the desires of the GTU family.
We know that in terms of this task our work will be challenging and our responsibility great. However our belief and our ambition are just as great! We have dreams for our university. We will first transform our dreams into goals, then our goals into reality. All we wish from you is to continue the valuable work that will contribute to our university and your support.
“People are not the sum of what they do but the sum of what they have not done yet”. Therefore we will continue in pursuit of what we have not been able to do yet for our University.
From now on our share of the work and responsibility for the University as a member of the GTU family may be different but our denominator is a single common one: unconditional service to our university in a setting of mutual understanding, cooperation, trust and serenity!
Wishing that you will never feel the absence of the power, privilege and joy of being part of the GTU Family, I hope that the 2014-2018 term will be beneficial for our University and extend my love, respect and gratitude”.
Who is Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün?
After graduating from the Yıldız Technical University, Electricity- Electronics Faculty, Electrical Engineering Department in 1995, he completed his Science Institute Electrical Engineering Department Master’s Program at the same university in 1998. In 2003, he completed his doctorate studies with the thesis titled ‘Nonlinear Observer Design for Fuel Cell Power Systems’ at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, USA. After his doctorate graduation he did post doctorate research studies at the University of Connecticut between 2004-2005.
Starting out as an Assistant Associate Professor at the Yıldız Technical University, Electricity- Electronics Faculty, Electrical Engineering Department in 2008, Dr. Haluk Görgün achieved the title of Associate Professor in 2008 and served as the Vice President of the Electrical Engineering Department in 2008-2009. After becoming the founding Department Head of the Yıldız Technical University, Electricity- Electronics Faculty, Control and Automation Engineering Department Dr. Haluk Görgün continued this position through 2009-2013. During his term as Department Head he established the English bachelor’s degree program, the English master’s degree program, the Thesis-free Education 1 Master’s Degree Program, the Thesis-free Education 2 Master’s Degree Program, and joint Thesis-free Master’s Programs with the Hasan Kalyoncu University. Dr. Haluk Görgün served as the Turkish Delegate to the European Union 7th Framework Program Energy Field in 2007-2010. Having been a member of the Board of Directors for the Yıldız Technical University Technopark, BAP Coordinatorship and the Science Application and Research Center, Dr. Haluk Görgün also undertook the editing of the Yıldız Technical University Sigma Engineering and Science Journal between 2010 and 2013. Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün served as the Yıldız Technical University Science Institute Assistant Director and Assistant Rector. Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün was elected as an Associate Member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences in 2012.
