“The Workshop on Economic Welfare through Research and Development on Natural Products” takes place in Nepal

The International workshop titled “The Workshop on Economic Welfare through Research and Development on Natural Products”, organized through the cooperation of The Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia-AASSA and Nepal Academy of Science and Technology-NAST, and the support of Global Network of Science Academies-IAP in Nepal on March 29-31 was attended by AASSA Chairman and IAP Co-Chairman Prof. Krishan Lal, TÜBA Chairman Prof. Ahmet Cevat Acar, TÜBA Honorary Member and AASSA Deputy Chairman Prof. Namık Kemal Aras, TÜBA Deputy Chairman Prof. Ahmet Nuri Yurdusev and TÜBA Principal Member Prof. Kazım Şahin as well as scientists from other member academies.

In TÜBA Deputy Chairman Prof. Yurdusev’s paper entitled “The Role of Science and Scientists in the Economic Development: The Example of Turkey,” he explained that “economic development depends on the three main elements of natural resources; human resources and technology, and that scientists and institutions are determinants in the element of technology” on the example of Turkey.

In the presentation by Prof. Şahin, entitled “The Molecular Mechanism of Phytochemicals in the Prevention of Chronic Diseases”, in which he shared results of the work done by his team on animal models; he underlined the general and cellular effects of phytochemicals, especially on renal, colorectal and ovarian cancer types, and emphasized that detailed clinical studies are needed on phytochemicals in particular.

At the Workshop attended by scientists concerned with herbal products used especially in preventive medicine from many different countries like Turkey, Nepal, South Korea, Japan, India, China, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Russia, Armenia, Georgia, the Philippines, Germany, Hungary, Indonesia and Pakistan; presentations were given on the use of herbal products in medicine. As a result of the presentations in Nepal, where a majority of the herbal products used throughout the world in medicine are produced, the fact that many more studies are needed in this field was underlined.

A Cooperation Agreement was signed between TÜBA and NAST
A “Scientific Cooperation Agreement” was signed between TÜBA and the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology-NAST on March 31, 2016 in Nepal’s capital Katmandu.

The agreement signed by TÜBA Chairman Prof. Ahmet Cevat Acar and NAST Deputy Chairman Prof. Jiba Raj Pokharel stipulates that cooperation be established between the two academies to organize scientific meetings, symposiums, conferences and workshops as well as exchanges of scientists and publications. 

In the statement by TÜBA Chairman Prof. Ahmet Cevat Acar on the subject, he pointed out that one of TÜBA’s important functions is to establish and develop international scientific relations and cooperation, and added; “In the framework of this function that TÜBA serves in the nature of scientific diplomacy, the number of academies we have cooperation established with has exceeded 30 and the number of “inter-academy organizations” to which we are a member has reached 12. We hope that this agreement with NAST will provide important contributions to the cooperation and relations in scientific and other fields between the two countries”.

The signing ceremony was attended by TÜBA Deputy Chairman Prof. Ahmet Nuri Yurdusev, Prof. Namık Kemal Aras and Prof. Kazım Şahin and NAST General Secretary Dr. Buddhi Ratna Khadge.
