The Passing of Former TÜBA Member Prof. Dr. Tosun Terzioğlu
Former TÜBA Member and Founding Rector of the Sabancı University Prof. Tosun Terzioğlu passed away on February 23, 2016.
We offer our condolences to the family, loved ones and the scientific community of Prof. Tosun Terzioğlu, an important name in the mathematical world, who was born in Istanbul in 1942 and had been receiving treatment for health issues.
Note: The funeral services for Prof. Dr. Tosun Terzioğlu will be held at the Bebek Mosque on February 25 after the afternoon prayer service, and the burial will take place at the Zincirlikuyu Cemetery.
Who was Prof. Tosun Terzioğlu?
After graduating from the Robert College in 1961, Tosun Terzioğlu got his degree in mathematics in 1965 from the British University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and finished his doctorate at the University of Frankfurt in 1968.
Terzioğlu, who taught at the University of Michigan, Wuppertal and Middle Eastern Technical Universities served as the Head of the Mathematical Department at the Middle Eastern Technical University in 1974-1975 and 1989-1991 was also the Dean of Science and Literature Faculty in 1977-1982.
Tosun Terzioğlu was a member of the TÜBİTAK Basic Sciences Group in 1977-1981, a member of the Intercollegiate Board in 1979-1981, a member of the Senate at the METU in 1990-1991, and the TÜBİTAK President in 1992-1997. During the same period he was a member in the Turkish Technology Development Foundation board of directors, a member of the KOSGEB Executive Board, the Turkish Representative of the NATO Science Committee in 1993-1997, Chairman of the Board of Directors in the Scientific and Technical Research Foundation (BİTAV) in 1996-1997 and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center in 1997-2000.
Tosun Terzioğlu, who served as a member of the TÜBİTAK Science Board in 1997-2001, was the Chairman of the Turkish Mathematics Association since 1990; rector of the Sabancı University since 1997 and member of the Board of Directors of the Third Sector of Turkey Foundation-TÜSEV since 2002. With memberships in Editorial and Redaction Boards, over 50 scientific articles in the field of Mathematics and two books, Prof. Dr. Tosun Terzioğlu also won the 1974 TÜBİTAK Incentive Award and 1986 TÜBİTAK Science Award.
Prof. Terzioğlu was one of the first members of TÜBA in 1993.
