The First Step Has Been Taken Toward the Publication of 'Babur Shah and His Legacy'

The “Babur Shah and His Legacy Workshop,” organized as part of the book titled “Babur Shah and His Legacy”—whose preparations were initiated by TÜBA to mark the 500th anniversary spanning the years 1526–2026—was successfully held in Ankara.

Interdisciplinary Focus at the Opening
Held at the EBS Hotel, the workshop examined the military, political, and cultural legacy of Babur Shah from a multifaceted perspective. The program began at 12:30 p.m. with opening remarks. TÜBA President Prof. Dr. Muzaffer Şeker, in his speech, highlighted the historical and scientific significance of the project, emphasizing that Babur and the Mughal legacy must be comprehensively evaluated not only from the perspective of political history but also in terms of culture, literature, art, institutional history, and the history of thought. Pointing out the importance of addressing the subject within an interdisciplinary framework, President Şeker stated that new scientific meetings and publication projects, serving as a continuation of this workshop, would also be implemented. He noted that this study, which serves as a continuation of TÜBA’s previous projects “Genghis Khan and His Legacy” and “Amir Timur and His Legacy,” aims to provide an academic perspective on the 500th anniversary of Babur’s rise to power in India.

The framework for the book project was established

The workshop session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Feridun M. Emecen, a Full Member of TÜBA and a faculty member at Istanbul University. Academics shared their views on the scope, main headings, and potential author roster of the planned book. A consensus was reached on addressing the political, administrative, foreign policy, economic, scientific, artistic, and cultural dimensions of Babur and the Mughal Empire. At the conclusion of the meeting, it was decided to organize a symposium themed “Babur Shah and His Legacy.” Additionally, a decision was made to initiate the necessary editorial and administrative processes to ensure the book’s publication by 2026.

The workshop, which was attended online by Prof. Dr. Musa Şamil Yüksel from Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University (AYBÜ) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sherzodhon Mahmudov from the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, featured Prof. Dr. Hayrunnisa Alan from Istanbul Medeniyet University (IMU), Prof. Dr. Zeynep Tarım from Istanbul University (İÜ), Prof. Dr. Muhammed Bilal Çelik from Sakarya University; Prof. Dr. Necdet Tosun from Marmara University; Prof. Dr. Neslihan Durak from İnönü University; Prof. Dr. Tanju Seyhan from Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts (MSGÜ), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Çelik from AYBÜ, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nilgün Dalkesen and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ertuğrul İsmail Ökten from İMÜ, and Dr. Mehmet Tuğrul from TÜBA.
