The ‘2nd International Congress on Stem Cell and Cellular Therapies” was Organized with the Cooperation of TÜBA

The “2nd International Congress on Stem Cell and Cellular Therapies” organized with the support of TÜBA Council Member Prof. Dr. Fikrettin Şahin, in which basic and clinical studies in the field of stem cells in Turkey and the world were discussed and scientists conducting the most important stem cell research in the world converged; took place in Antalya on October 15-18.

Sir John B. Gurdon (University of Cambridge, Wellcome Trust/CRUK Gurdon Institute, England), who won the Nobel Prize in 2012 for his genetic work in stem cells, presented the opening speech of the Congress attended by over 50 different guest speakers from 15 different countries.

A ‘Special TÜBA Session’ titled “Clinical Trials in Turkey” was organized at the Congress in which the studies of eight leading Turkish scientists were presented. During the ‘Special Session’ organized in cooperation with the Academy, the first speech will be given by Özgür Bakar and TÜBA Stem Cell Study Group Member Ercüment Ovalı. The Session will also include TÜBA Stem Cell Study Group Member Mustafa Çetin’s presentation titled ‘New Views on Mesenchymal Stem Cell Applications in the Field of Hemotology, Alp Can’s speech on the ‘Study of Alternative MSC Sources for Heart Treatment’, Işık Akgün’s presentation and Zeynep Burçin Gönen’s ‘Mesenchymal Stem Cell Applications in Regenerative Medicine’, Ekrem Ünal’s ‘Clinical Applications of the T Cell’ and Murat Kantarcıoğlu’s ‘From Stem Cell Studies to Gastroenterology Applications’.

Over eighty speeches were presented at the Congress on a variety of scientific studies on stem cells and cellular therapy applications especially in ‘neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases, skeletal muscular diseases, plastic surgery and orthopedics, immunotherapy and dentistry’. The Congress, organized for the second time this year, included prominent names in the scientific world concerning stem cell research, panel discussions, meet-with-an-expert platforms and verbal/poster presentations. The sessions included ‘Customized to Individual and Regenerative Medical Applications, Clinical Applications in Stem Cell Research, Stem Cell and Cellular Products, Cellular Programming and Current Issues in IPS Cell Research, Model Organisms in Stem Cell Research and Ethical Issues’.

The closing speech was made by LLC founder and CSO Mahendra Rao, who was appointed as the US National Institute of Health Regenerative Medicine administration in 2011.
