Meeting Held to Introduce Books Published by TÜBA’s Turkish-Islamic Scientific and Cultural Heritage Project
A meeting was held on August 31, 2016 to introduce TÜBA’s Turkish-Islamic Scientific and Cultural Heritage Project (TİBKM) and books published by this project, Bursalı Mehmed Tahir’s “Osmanlı Müellifleri” (“Ottoman Authors”) and Ebheri’s “İsaguci Mantığa Giriş” (“Isagoge Introduction to Logic”), with the participation of Faruk Özlü, Minister of Science, Industry and Technology.
In the meeting attended by TÜBA Council members and scholars from various fields, in addition to Minister Faruk Özlü, President of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) Prof. Yekta Saraç, TÜBA President Prof. Ahmet Cevat Acar, and TÜBA Council member Prof. Hüseyin Sarıoğlu addressed the participants.
We will keep publishing other works as part of the project
Minister Özlü said the Turkish-Islamic Cultural Works Project aimed to bring 100 works written in Arabic, Persian and various dialects of Turkish to the attention of the scientific community and added, “Today, we are sharing two invaluable works published by the project. One of these is ‘Ottoman Authors’, prepared for publication by YÖK President Prof. Yekta Saraç. This book, written by Bursalı Mehmed Tahir in the final years of the Ottoman Empire, constitutes a very comprehensive bibliography. The other book we published is ‘Isagoge Introduction to Logic’ by Ebheri. Prepared for publication by Prof. Hüseyin Sarıoğlu, this book is important in that it was taught as an introduction to logic in medreses for a very long time. We have started with these two books, and God willing, we will keep publishing the other works one by one.”
Prof. Acar, on the other hand, said the project was important in that it signified Turkey’s making pace with its own cultural heritage, and added, “Of the books published, ‘Ottoman Authors’, was edited by TÜBA principal member Yekta Saraç, and the other, ‘Isagoge Introduction to Logic’ was edited by TÜBA Council member Prof. Hüseyin Sarıoğlu. We are planning to publish 10 more works this year. The Turkish-Islamic Scientific and Cultural Heritage Project, which aims to publish 100 works from history, medicine, geography and other fields, is funded by the Ministry of Development. Turkish Academy of Sciences undertook an important task by protecting our cultural heritage, and I think the project is important for Academy’s mission of promoting a scientific outlook. I believe this humble project will improve our self-confidence by helping develop a healthier attitude towards our history and our past, and contribute to our scientific and overall development.”
