The lifelong work ‘Historical and Etymological Dictionary of Turkish’ of famous Austrian Turcologist Prof. Dr. Andreas Tietze, who worked as a faculty member at the Istanbul University will be published by TÜBA. Prof. Dr. Andreas Tietze’s daughter and her spouse visited TÜBA Chairman Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cevat Acar on the occasion of this project.

The first volume was published by Prof. Dr. Andreas Tietze himself and the 2nd volume was published 7 years after his death by the Austrian Academy of Sciences Press in Turkish. TÜBA has started working to bring this 7 volume work of Prof. Dr. Andreas Tietze to the Turkish language in the scope of a new project.

All rights to the work have been taken over by TÜBA and all of Andreas Tietze’s successors have collected the materials he had prepared before his death and delivered them to TÜBA to use in this project. The preparation for publication process of the work will be started in the coming weeks with the people who had been involved in working on the first volume. The dictionary which will be comprised of a total of 7 volumes is planned to be published in the first half of 2015 with two volumes reviewed and 3 volumes completed.

During the visit TÜBA Chairman Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cevat Acar said that as TÜBA they placed great value on the publication of this work in terms of the Turkish Language and thanked the Tietze family sincerely for all the support they had provided in transferring the copyright of the work and collected all the related materials.

Andreas Tietze’s daughter Filiz Tietze said that her father was interested in Eastern languages, Turkish history and culture and that Andreas Tietze's had made research trips to Turkey in 1937-1938. Pointing out that her father could not return to Austria which was under occupation at that time, she explained that Andreas Tietze stayed in Istanbul to teach and do research on the Turkish language and this is when he started working on the Redhouse dictionary.

Filiz Tietze expressed her pleasure at TÜBA’s decision to revitalize the dictionary and added, "Completing the Historical and Etymological Dictionary of Turkish is very important for us because my father Andreas Tietze spent 70 years of his life collecting the words that are in the 7 volume dictionary. I am very pleased with TÜBA, a very distinguished institution, for publishing the work that my father had created but was unable to complete”.

During the visit Bilkent University Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Semih Tezcan, Yunus Emre Institute Chairman Prof. Dr. Hayati Develi, TÜBA Principle Member and İstanbul Medeniyet University Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Mustafa Çiçekler and TÜBA Chairman Advisor Prof. Dr. İbrahim Kaya were in attendance.
