47th TÜBA General Assembly was Held

The opening of TÜBA’s 47th General Assembly and 30,000 Engineering Terms Dictionary that was prepared under the scope of Turkish Science Glossary Studies was held by the Minister of Industry and Technology Fikri Işık at the Green Park Hotel in Ankara.

Minister Işık, in his speech at the opening of the 47th General Assembly of TÜBA, stated that countries have a temporary and a permanent agenda and that the cyclical agenda is coalition alternatives and talks while the permanent agenda is science and technology.

Işık stated the requirement for maturation of the temporary agenda in the best way and said Turkey should take the required steps to reach the result that supports the permanent agenda in science and technology, by expressing his best wishes for the Engineering Terms Dictionary that is opened for internet access to be beneficial to the country and science world and he indicated that printing of the dictionary will take place in 2016.

Işık, expressing that the studies done in the field of science do not only shape the future of countries, but also give direction to the future of humanity. He stated that countries developed in the technology area, particularly made scientific progress the basic driving force of the development.

Minister Işık said "If Turkey aims to become a leading country in all aspects of life, no doubt that science is the most important field we should attach the most importance. Because every step taken in science will mean that all the other areas will take a few steps more in progress." Therefore Işık pointed out that reflecting scientific approach and thinking on all aspects of life should be regarded as the main priority.

Işık explained that thanks to the confidence and stability achieved in the last three years, the environment for the development of science in Turkey has been formed and that no longer the economic crisis but what needs to be done for the development of science and progress should be discussed. He mentioned that during that time, the number of universities increased from 76 to 193, techno-parks from 2 to 59, R & D centers to 185, while the number of technology transfer offices reached 34.

"Science should be endeared to individuals at an early age"

Işık stated that they expect TÜBA to take a more active role on the issues such as endearing science to the individuals at an early age, awarding the scientific studies, enrichment of the content of science centers and he added that for sustainable success science should be endeared at a very early age since instilling love for science after a certain age is difficult.

"TÜBA has a very wide experience"

Işık stated that they started to build science centers in Turkey and added that they aim to establish a worldwide science center in Istanbul and they are conducting a serious work in cooperation with the Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul for this purpose.

Işık, expressing that they pay serious figures for science exhibitions, continued his words as follows: "We have a significant expectation from TÜBA. I particularly want to say that we have imported science exhibitions here from abroad by paying very serious figures. However, TÜBA has a remarkably wide experience. If TÜBA produces the conceptual projects of the science exhibitions by itself, we think that to produce with local facilities will be cost effective and affordable. At the same time, we will make science popular among children at an early age and then realize the concept for stimulating curiosity in science at our centers. Then we need to put forward the materials and designs that will be sent to the schools."

Minister Işık emphasized the fact that if the works carried out in this area reach to a good point, the love of science will more rapidly grow at schools compared to the present day and stated that in that case, there wouldn’t be so many problems in bringing up worldwide scientists.

Işık pointed out that the only way to grow young people that understand, perceive, comment, analyze, synthesize and evaluate is by popularizing science for them at a very young age. He added "We expect TÜBA to take a major role in this period. We are ready to provide the required funding for this work, regardless of the amount”.

TÜBA Engineering Terms Dictionary opened to online access

After TÜBA President Mr. Acar gave him a plaque, Minister Işık opened the Engineering Terms Dictionary that includes 30 thousand terms to "online" access. Then, he presented a plaque to TÜBA Science Terms Dictionary Executive Committee Conductor Prof. Dr. Bülent Sankur, and their charters to the Honorary Members of the Academy, Prof. Dr. Stars Bayazıtoğlu and Prof. Dr. With Şinasi Özsoylu as well as the newly elected and associated members.

The President of TÜBA Prof. Dr. Acer Ahmet Cevat stated that TÜBA, which is aimed to include all the science fields and scientists of Turkey, was established in 1993 and he gave information about the function of TÜBA and he mentioned that it will continue to contribute to science both in Turkey and worldwide as Turkey's national academy with their strategic approach that regards differences as wealth.

Prof. Acar continued his words as follows: "In this period while continuing our working groups such as stem cells, cancer and other similar activities, we have started the newly created working groups’ activities as well. Particularly based on the importance of it, the basic function we expect from the ‘Science and Education Working Group’ is to form recommendations on Turkey's science strategies and polices. Moreover, the Food, Nutrition and the Prevention of Cancer Symposium was carried out by the Food and Nutrition, a new working group, in May in Elazig.

Within the scope of the 'Turkish-Islam Scientific and Cultural Heritage' project that was started with the idea that awareness of historical and cultural background has a great importance in Turkey’s and the Turkish nation’s scientific and overall development, the first works under the project will be published in the coming weeks. We think this project will make a significant contribution especially to the new generations’ social development, motivation for improvement and reconstruction of self-confidence. Also with TÜBA Academy Awards whose invitation has been made recently, international awards will be given to scientists in 3 fields for the first time in Turkey."

After the conference of Honorary Member of TÜBA, György Hazaie, entitled "Present Problems of Turkology", the General Assembly continued as closed to the press to identify candidates for Academy presidency and new members to the academy.
