The awardees of the 2012 TÜBA Awards for University Textbooks (copyrighted and translated works) are announced: 18 works in natural, engineering, life and social sciences were given the “Copyrighted and Translated Works Award” while 12 works received the “Remarkable Work Award (Honorable Mention)”. The awards will be presented at a ceremony to be held in Ankara on June 8, 2013, on the occasion of the General Assembly meeting of TÜBA.

The TÜBA GEBİP (Outstanding Young Scientists Award Program) was started in 2001 with the purpose of contributing to the formation of a generation of competent researchers in science, engineering, life and social sciences in Turkey. The awardees of the year 2012 are announced: This year 28 young researchers will be supported by the GEBİP Award.

The 14^th ALLEA (All European Academies) General Assembly meeting was held in Berlin between 29-30 April 2013. TÜBA President Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cevat Acar, Academy Council Member Prof. Dr. Tayfun Özçelik and Principal Member Prof. Dr. Taner Demirer participated in the meetings which were hosted by the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Prof. Dr. Kadriye Arzum Erdem GÜRSAN, Associate Member of TÜBA and professor at the Aegean University, School of Pharmacology, Department of Analytical Chemistry, was given the “2013 Science Award” of the Turkish Union of Pharmacologists. The Presidium of the Turkish Academy of Sciences congratulates her and wishes the continuation of her successful career.

TÜBA-GEBİP (Outstanding Young Scientists Award Program) awardee and professor at Mediterranean University, Department of Physics Prof. Dr. İsmail Boztosun and his team realized one of the most fundamental experiments of nuclear physics: using gamma-rays to detach neutrons and photons from atomic nuclei. Prof. Dr. Taner DEMİRER, Principal Member of TÜBA, made important contributions to stem cell research with two new books that he edited. One of them entitled “New Advances in Stem Cell Transplantation” published in 2012 and released in Europe, will be an important reference book for scientists working in regenerative medicine.

The election of Prof. Dr. Bilal Tanatar and Prof. Dr. Ekmel Özbay, Principal members of the Turkish Academy of Sciences, as members of Academia Europaea (The European Academy) was approved by its Council at Bergen, on 11 September 2012. Both of our members were elected for the section on “Physical and Engineering Sciences” of Academia Europaea where membership is by invitation only.
