TÜBA Member Prof. Orhan Elected to EU Working Group

TÜBA Associate Member Prof. İlkay Erdoğan Orhan has been invited to contribute as a member to the European Union (EU) Working Group to be established under the "One Health" umbrella at the suggestion of TÜBA.

The Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM), which works with the European Commission's independent Group of Chief Scientific Advisors (GCSA) and the SAPEA Consortium to provide independent and transparent scientific advice to the European Commission, has established an international and interdisciplinary working group, co-chaired by Prof. Jakob Zinnstag and Prof. Tyra Grove Krause, to prepare an "Evidence Review Report" to underpin the scientific opinion of SAPEA, GCSA.

Prof. Orhan, Advisor to the Rector of Gazi University, Faculty of Pharmacy, Gazi University, was selected for the international and interdisciplinary working group on cross-sectoral evidence-based governance for the EU's 'One Health' following an independent review by the European Commission's Selection Committee to support SAM.

Who is Prof. Dr. İlkay Erdoğan Orhan?
Born in 1972 in Ankara, Türkiye. She graduated from Gazi University, Faculty of Pharmacy in 1993 and completed her 1st master's degree in Pharmacognosy at the same university in 1996 with a TÜBİTAK-Scientist Training Group scholarship. She completed her 2nd master's degree at Ryukyus University, Japan with a scholarship from the Japanese Ministry of Education and her PhD at Gazi University, Faculty of Pharmacy in 2002. In 2003, she was a visiting researcher at the University of Winnipeg, Canada with a TÜBİTAK-NATO scholarship. In 2004, she received the title of associate professor and in 2009 she received the title of professor. She was the founding dean of Eastern Mediterranean University Faculty of Pharmacy between 2011 and 2014, and served as the dean of Gazi University Faculty of Pharmacy between 2016 and 2024.

Prof. Orhan is a Full Member of TÜBA and the Islamic World Academy of Sciences, President of the Pharmacy Academy of the Turkish Pharmacists Association, Vice President of the International Scientific Board of the Austrian Drug Research Agency (ADSI), and served as the representative of the European Phytochemical Society (PSE) Southeast Europe & Türkiye. She has 290 articles published in SCI indexed scientific journals, 4 books, 4 patents, 6 patent applications and one licensed product. She has an H index of 53 (WoS), 58 (Scopus) and has various national and international awards such as TÜBA-Loreal Young Scientist, Gazi University Honor Award, Organization of Islamic Cooperation Science Award, Golden Mortar Science Award, Turkish Pharmacists Association Pharmacy Academy Science Award, OWSD (Organization of Women in Science in Developing Countries) Asia-Pacific Region Young Scientist Award, Pharmaceutical Pharmacy Health and Science Technologies Foundation (İVEK) Achievement Award, World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Science Award in Chemistry. Prof. Dr. İlkay Erdoğan Orhan has been serving as Advisor to the Rector of Gazi University since 2024.
