AASSA and TÜBA Carried Out “The Regional Workshop of Women in Science and Technology”

Asia Science Academies and Communities Association (AASSA) and TÜBA carried out “Regional Workshop of Women in Science and Technology” on May 29-30, 2014 hosted by Ege University and with the contributions of Science Academies Global Network.

The workshop started with the speeches of Dr. Arzum Erdem; TÜBA Association Member and Instructor of Ege University, Prof. Dr. Namık Kemal Aras; TÜBA Honorary Member and AASSA Vice President, Prof. Dr. Atilla Silkü; Vice Chancellor of Ege University and Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cevat Acar; President of TÜBA and awarding platelets.

A total of 19 speechmakers participated in the Workshop carried out in order to remove the existing problems of women working in the fields of science and technology in AASSA member countries and to develop methods to encourage women to participate in science. Works to be done about the policies implemented by governments on women scientists, contributions of science communities to progress of women in scientific fields, the identity problems they have, comparing the best practices regarding the Professional progress of women in science field and encouraging the little girls into science were discussed.

While 15 scientists from Malaysia, Azerbaijan, Nepal, Armenia, Indonesia, Mongolia, Korea, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Philippines put forth the relationship among women, science and technology within their own countries and within the global context; TÜBA Association Member Prof. Dr. Hayrunnisa Bolay Belen, Dr. Günseli Naymansoy, Prof. Dr. Işıl Aksan Kurnaz ; Instructor of Yeditepe University, Prof. Dr. Aylin Güney; Instructor of Yaşar University, Prof. Dr. Semahat Demir; Rector of Istanbul Kültür University from Turkey made presentations titled “Is There Any Neurobiological Basis for Gender Gap in Science?”, “Women in Engineering”, “Turkish Women in Life Sciences”, “Women Scholars in the Field of International Relations: Challenges and Prospects Regarding the Turkish Case” and “Importance of Diversity to Promote the Science and Technology Education and Workforce Internationally” respectively.

Prof. Dr. Namık Kemal Aras, who got the floor at the end of the Workshop and who said one of the most important issues AASSA focused on was “the place of women in science and technology” continued his words as follows: “We especially arrange workshops on this issue for 3-4 years. As in here, all of the participants in other workshops are people who thought on, work on and made speeches on this subject. The report to be arranged after the Workshop will be published as a book by AASSA and thus it will be communicated to whole world via academy and other channels.”

The Workshop which lasted two days ended after the tour of Ephesus arranged for participants.
