TÜBA President Prof. Ahmet Cevat Acar Attanded to the “UNESCO 3rd Great Meeting”

TÜBA President Prof. Ahmet Cevat Acar attended  tothe 3rd Great Meeting organized by UNESCO Turkish National Commission (UTMK) in Antalya on 4-5 November 2016.

About 200 participants attended to the meeting with UTMK Chairman of the General Assembly and the National Education Minister Ismet Yilmaz UTMK Members of the General Assembly, Board members,   Members of the Specialized Committees, UNESCO Director of Gender Equality Division, ambassadors,   UNESCO representatives of universities, academicians, representatives of non-governmental organizations, representatives of private organizations, press representatives and experts working on UNESCO issues.

TÜBA President Prof. Ahmet Cevat Acar made a presentation on "Science for Sustainable Development" at the Natural Science Panel on November 5th. Prof. Acar stated that science is an indispensable element for sustainable development, Turkey has made significant strides in science, education, research and development and innovation in particular in quantitative terms in recent years; in this context, the schooling rate at all levels, the number of educators and scientists, the share of the national income for R&D activites, the number of publications and patents has been increased considerably. Prof. Acar continued his words as this quantitative progression must be supported qualitatively, in terms of quality, without delay. In addition, in terms of sustainability, "institutionalization" and the necessary changes are also important.

"Sustainable development goals are all related in one way and about half are directly related to scientific progress. In this context, it is necessary to develop a strategic and systematic approach to the subsystems of education, research and development and innovation at all levels and to develop cooperation and coordination among actors in this field. An appropriate education and R&D system have great importance for an innovative economy in order to achieve our country's overall development goals. In this respect, the necessary steps have to be taken in necessary changes in the national education system, improving the interest of the qualified labor force in basic sciences and developing sustainable measures, supports to interdisciplinary team projects, making our country a center of attraction for qualified researches and scientists, developing the mentality and motivational function of social and human sciences. We, TÜBA, are continuing our activities in line with the objective of developing and sustaining our efforts towards the scientific development of our country in the frame of our aims and duties.

Turkish National Committe and TÜBA Member Prof. Mustafa Safran, TÜBA Asociate Member Prof. Y. Murat Elçin and a large number of scientists also attented to the UNESCO 3rd Great Meeting.
