TÜBA Honorary Member Prof. Kemal Haşim Karpat Among the Recipients of “Presidential Culture and Arts Grand Awards”

Presidential Culture and Arts Grand Awards, given on October 29 every year, were granted. Recipients of the 2016 Awards are TÜBA Honorary Member Prof. Kemal Haşim Karpat, Mustafa Kutlu, Prof. Erol Parlak, Şener Şen, Feridun Özgören and Ord. Prof. Süheyl Ünver.

Presidential Culture and Arts Grand Awards are granted on behalf of the Turkish State, as per the “Regulations on Presidential Culture and Arts Grand Awards”, to honor and encourage Turkish and foreign nationals and organizations that make important contributions to Turkish cultural and art life, strive to raise the standards of the country’s culture and arts, and are distinguished by their original works or service.

Recipients were nominated by the Assessment Board, which consisted of Fahri Kasırga, General Secretary of the President’s Office, Assoc. Prof. İbrahim Kalın, Assistant General Secretary of the President’s Office, Lütfullah Göktaş, Senior Media Advisor to the President, H. Hümeyra Şahin, Advisor to the President, Ömer Arısoy, Undersecretary of Culture and Tourism, Prof. Şeref Ateş, President of Yunus Emre Institute, and writer Alev Alatlı, and approved by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Prof.   Kemal Haşim Karpat was granted the award for his pioneering work in historiography and social analysis.
TÜBA Honorary Member Prof. Kemal Haşim Karpat was granted the award, as a distinguished social scientist and historian recognized by the global scientific community, for his works published in multiple languages, groundbreaking studies in historiography and social analysis, particularly those on the history of modernization in Turkey, which conducted from the perspective of people or society rather than the state, and methodologically pioneering research on the periodization of Ottoman history on the basis of land management.

Mustafa Kutlu defends our own history and values against alienation
Mustafa Kutlu was awarded the Presidential Culture and Arts Grand Award for pursuing the depth of Anatolian people by focusing on different reflections of the same worry and its effects on different lives together with a strong criticism of the modern age; calling upon Anatolia, that cradle of civilizations, to be always in action without stopping or tiring; defending our own history and values against alienation by looking at the city from its periphery; and telling the story of Turkish lands by forming strong connections with the society.

Prof.   Erol Parlak conveys the cultural riches and spirit of Anatolia
Prof. Erol Parlak was granted the award for systematizing şelpe (fingerpicking) technique and representing the tradition of fingerpicking bağlama in the modern age; carrying the cultural riches and spirit of Anatolia to the world; exploring the frontiers of the art of music with new inventions but without severing ties with tradition and origins; and making important academic contributions to the literature on Turkish music, in addition to his performances, particularly by conducting the most comprehensive study on Neşet Ertaş the “Poor Nightingale”.   

The great actor Şener Şen shows that there is no such thing as a small part
Şener Şen was granted the award for going beyond character acting in Turkish cinema and delivering unforgettable performances and lines in different roles with his unique talent and original style; expressing his social stance using the refined language of art and successfully reflecting the people and their problems that inspired his acting; and showing, as a great actor, that there is no such thing as a small part by focusing on his performance no matter what the role is.

Feridun Özgören keeps old and deep-rooted arts alive as a master
Feridun Özgören was also among the recipients of the award for performing the traditional art of ebru, paper marbling, in today’s world and particularly in the West with his unique sizes and interpretations; offering melodies of Ottoman and Turkish music to Americans in the Cambridge Musiki Cemiyeti (Cambridge Society For Classical Turkish Music), which the founded; manufacturing ney, tanbur and bendir and training apprentices; re-introducing the instrument çeng to Turkish music, which he manufactured on the basis of drawings in miniatures; and keeping old and deep-rooted arts, foremost among them ebru, alive as a master.

Ord. Prof. Süheyl Ünver studied Turkish culture with unceasing faith and determination
Prof. Süheyl Ünver was granted the award for conducting studies with unceasing determination and faith in the permanence of Turkish culture in these fertile lands; merging “sound mind, sound heart and sound taste” with a sufi joy to create successful combinations; and expressing these combinations in his wise poetry, illuminated manuscripts (tezhip), watercolor paintings and other scientific and art works and presenting them to the Turkish nation and the world.

The ceremony for Presidential Culture and Arts Grand Awards will be held in the Presidential Complex at a time to be announced later.
