TÜBA-GEBİP Annual Evaluation Meeting, that aims to improve the relationship and cooperation between scientists and science organizations through the presentation and evaluation of academic studies of outstanding young scientists awarded under the title of TÜBA Young Scientists Award Program (TÜBA-GEBİP), was held on September 22-24, 2017 with the hosting of Atatürk University.
TÜBA President Prof. Ahmet Cevat Acar gave information about the meeting which was held in Atatürk University Nene Hatun Cultural Center and underlined that they were running the TÜBA-GEBİP Award Program diligently.
Prof. Ahmet Cevat Acar “The duty of our scientists is very big especially at this difficult period we are in.”
Stating that GEBİP Award, brings condition of working in Turkey, is an unprecedented award both in Turkey and in many parts of the world in terms of both increasing Turkey-based work and supporting the financially and scientifically supporting outstanding scientists, Prof. Acar said: “I especially appreciate our consultant scientists. These academicians are not scientists connected with professional business relations to TÜBA and we carry out the Academy programs and projects voluntarily with them. I would like to express my gratitude to our members and scientists who actually came to this meeting as a demonstration of this voluntary contribution.”
Reminding that the law and building needs of TÜBA are continuing, Prof. Acar said: “I will continue to do everything for solving the problem about these two needs before the end of the Presidential period. At least I want to solve the law issue. We are constantly emphasizing the importance of these two issues in terms of institutionalization and better functioning of the Academy. We agree with our political counterparts, but the process needs to be done a bit faster. We will continue our efforts to reach the result as soon as possible.”
Saying that five years ago, when he began his assignment, he aimed to be an example to society about considering differences as wealth rather than as the cause of conflict, and he worked as hard as he could, Prof. Acar continued his word as: “At this moment, the Republic of Turkey and our geography are under an open imperialist attack. The FETÖ treacherous coup attempt is one of the most traumatic, striking and rarely seen examples of history. This war and this attack continues. Today, it is now a necessity for all Turkish citizens, who are concerned about the existence, unity, integrity, independence of Turkey, to act jointly for the common denominators and the survival of our country. We think that the task of, especially, the scientists is great at this point. We are confronted with a hybrid war in which every path and method is seen usual. But I believe that the future generations will live in a stronger and more prosperous country, so that our country will come out of the face of this situation.”
Atatürk University Rector Prof. Ömer Çomaklı “Universities that transform information into products have great responsibilities.”
Starting his words by saying that Erzurum is a science and education center with a thousand-year history, Prof. Çomaklı spoke as follow: “It is an exciting work for us to bring our science, culture and art history works together with the new generation through the project of Turkish-Islamic Science Cultural Heritage Project by TÜBA. It is very thought-provoking if we are buying technology from abroad today while the Uighurs had found the first printing house, and the paper had gone from Samarkand to the world. As members of a civilization that cultivates important scientists like Ali Kuşçu, Sharif Mardin, Aziz Sancar, we must rapidly cover our loss in science and technology. We must adapt our own science and technology potential to the contemporary understanding of the world. The universities that transform information into product have great responsibilities.”
Erzurum Metropolitan Mayor Mehmet Sekmen “We have to develop the university-industry cooperation in our country.”
Saying that awarding the young scientists who produce information is the biggest service, Sekmen continued his words as: “Young people need to be encouraged, we are a nation with a thousand years’ history, but we are still back a little bit of the race. We all know the games played on our country. If we cannot get the weapons that we paid, then we will think first and then we will produce them. Investors who come to our city want to get information about the laboratories and R&D centers of our universities. We have to develop the university-industry cooperation in our country. I would like to congratulate TÜBA. We need entrepreneur scientists who produce ideas and make these ideas real. So, it is very important that our young people's work is awarded and appreciated.”
The GEBİP winners presented their scientific projects and works in the last one year to the Academy Members and other GEBİP winners in six separate simultaneous sessions of Science-Chemistry, Physics-Mathematics, Health and Life Sciences, Engineering Sciences I-II and Social Sciences during the day on September 23. Presentations that were open to the participation of all interested scientists ended with the "General Evaluation Meeting" with the participation of all groups. At the end of the day, a trip to the Botanical Park was organized for the participants.
The annual meeting ended on September 24 with visits to Erzurum and its surroundings.
