“Honor Mark” to TÜBA Founding Member Prof. Dr. Nilüfer Göle From France

Prof. Dr. Nilüfer Göle, who is TÜBA Founding Member and Works as research manager for 15 years in Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris was considered worthy to ‘Legion d'Honneur Mark’ by France Higher Education and Research Ministry.
Among the research fields of Prof. Göle are Islam, public space, social gender, secularism and multiple modernities. The mark was given to Göle, who was considered worth to award due to the contributions of her research on Islam and public space in Europe and alternative modernities as well as the aforementioned, by Prof. Dr. Alain Touranie who is a leading sociologist in the world and at the same time her teacher. Göle stated that, with the award, her studies which may have the quality of a translator between civilizations and cultures and said: “This award is not given to me due to my inter-state contribution. It was given only due to my academy studies”. The famous sociologist expressed that it made her happy that the work she was trying to realize for years was recognized by others.
Prof. Göle was graduated from Middle East Technical University (METU) department of sociology in 1974. Nilüfer Göle, who started METU Department of Economy for Master, completed her Master degree in Paris 1 University and her PhD in sociology in Ecole des Hautes Etudes et en Sciences Sociale. He worked as Assistant Professor in Maison des Sciences de l´Homme and instructor in Ecole Superieur de Commerce de Paris. Prof. Dr. Göle, who worked as instructor in Boğaziçi University between 1986 and 2001 and who continues her Works in EHESS in which she completed her Dissertation since 2001, was chosen as TÜBA Founding Member in 2012.
Légion d’Honneur is a French Mark established by Napoléon Bonaparte in 1802. Légion d’Honneur, which is deemed the most prestigious mark given by France is divided into five classes: Grand-Croix (Great Cross), Grand-Officier (Grand Officer), Commandeur (Commander), Officier (Officer) and Chevalier (Knight).
