“TÜBA-Food Safety Symposium: Organic Products and Health” was Held at İnönü University

The scientific meeting on “Food Safety Symposium: Organic Products and Health” organized jointly by TÜBA-Food and Nutrition Working Group and Cancer Working Group hosted by Malatya İnönü University was held on October 12-14,2017 at Turgut Özal Congress and Culture Center.

TÜBA President Prof. Ahmet Cevat Acar: “We can reach our national targets in the extent we have developed our R & D and innovation performance.”
Voicing that TÜBA-Food and Nutrition Working Group actively involved in the organizing of the symposium, Prof. Acar said “As TÜBA, we carry out various activities to produce proposals at the level of policies and strategies for important, prior and current issues and these activities are reported and transferred to relevant stakeholders and public administration representatives and decision makers.”

Prof. Acar continued as follows: “The stability and security are paramount for scientific, economic and social development. In this sense, it is important to remember that it is our first duty to protect our country's security and integrity. Unfortunately, we have to see that our region and our country, which are targeted by imperialist foci, are facing serious attacks. In spite of all the negative struggles, we have to consider our differences as wealth and, if possible, we have to act with an approach that protects and supports our unity on the basis of developing our minimum common points. I think this is important for the happiness of all of us and for future generations as our responsibility. In particular, I would like to state that the responsibilities of scientists, intellectuals and universities are more in this respect. Our nationality has been an example to the world, which has recently achieved considerable success in protecting homeland and nation. We must be a country that produces science and technology. For this, it is vital to improve the quality and innovation performance of our universities. In this regard, we have to give importance to education and science without any delay. We can only reach our national targets in the extent we have developed our R & D and innovation performance.

Stating that they are honored to host the symposium organized by TÜBA, Prof. Kızılay said that organic agriculture is a rising value today and continued “I am confident that we will make very valuable contributions from our scientists. Apricot is a trademark of Malatya. We meet a very important proportion of dried apricot production in the world. “"How much of the apricot produced in Malatya is produced on the basis of organic farming?” We do not have a study to answer this question. With this symposium, it would be appropriate to start our studies in cooperation with relevant institutions and units in the city and to work towards this. We will take respond to these and similar questions with notifications, speeches, scientific studies and fieldwork in this symposium.” He also ended his speech by saying that they will be honored to host the activities that will be organized by TÜBA in the future.
TÜBA Council Member and Cancer Working Group Executive Prof. Taner Demirer “We need to develop national and international strategies in food safety, cancer, stem cell issues.”
Underlining that food, nutrition and cancer are highly related to each other, Prof. Demirer said that “Today, 32% of the world's cancer risk is thought to be due to cigarette smoking and smoking is responsible for 20 different types of cancer. The 35% cancer risk is due to wrong nutrition habits and obesity. Therefore, diet, obesity and cancer are closely related to each other. There are 14 million obesity patients in our country and 35% of our society is overweight. We are competing with the US almost in this regard. There are 8 million diabetics in Turkey and they are not aware that they have diabetes. I specifically say that because diabetes is an important disease that pose a risk in cancer. In the forthcoming periods, new treatment methods in cancer, gene and stem cell treatments, water resources, renewable energy sources, food and nutrition topics, and problems must be discussed and solved. We need to develop national and international strategies in these topics. The Food Safety Symposium is very important in this context. As our other meetings, we will prepare the report at the end of this symposium and send it to all public institutions and organizations.”

Stating that the symposium aims to give correct information about “organic product” in the relation to the concept of food safety in Turkey by making people avoid false perceptions, Prof. Şahin continued his words as follow: “The differences between traditional (village products), conventional, sustainable, good farming practices and organic farming are not fully known in the society and therefore unfair revenues can be obtained. The organic farming method, which requires knowledge, is more labor-intensive than traditional methods. There is a strict set of rules and standards for organic farming, which is to try to increase the quality of the actual product, and the inputs to be used in production are limited. In organic agriculture, the use of any kind of material which is harmful to human health is prohibited.”

Prof. Şahin also gave information the topics would be discussed in the symposium and said that there would be an important session on Biotechnological Approaches in Food Production with respect to GMOs, which is always a subject of debate in society.

Five sessions were held at the symposium. The symposium ended on 14 October with a social program on the historic and tourist areas of the region.
