The first four volumes of the “Historical and Etymological Dictionary of Turkish”, Austrian famous Turkolog TÜBA Honorary Prof. Andreas Tietze's 65 years of work, were published by TÜBA.
The dictionary, which Prof. Tietze planned as 7 volumes while he was alive, has been organized as eight volumes and one index by TÜBA. Four volumes containing the letters A-B, C-E, F-J, and K-L were published in more useful sizes than the first two previously printed.
TÜBA President Prof. Ahmet Cevat Acar said that Tietze was able to work intensively only after retiring for this big project and that he could publish the first volume of dictionary containing A-E letters shortly before his death. Prof. Acar continued his words as follows: “After the death of Andreas Tietze in 2003, his students and assistants worked on the second volume, which was partially prepared with the support provided by the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) and the volume containing F-J letters were published in 2009.”
Stating that the completion and publication of the dictionary by TÜBA started in 2014, Prof. Acar said that the Academy aims to complete and publish the work based on original drafts, notes and materials from Tietze. He added that: “For the 1st and 2nd volumes the copyright was taken from ÖAW and Simurg Bookstore and the copyright and publishing rights of all volumes were taken from Tietze’s family. The drafts, writings and documents about the dictionary that Prof Tietze had made while alive also received from Tiezte family and ÖAW. I hereby express our thanks to Tietze family, ÖAW and the publishing house. In 2015, Prof. Semih Tezcan started to run the dictionary project supported by Ministry of Development, including scientists who worked in the first two volume with Andreas Tiezte. With this project, we aim to bring this great historical and etymological dictionary covering about 700 years of Turkish to the world of Turkology and science, -perhaps- saving it from disappearance.
Stating that Historical and Etymological Dictionary of Turkish is the product of a meticulous study of Prof. Tietze’s life and the examination of a large number of books from a 700-year cycle by text scanning, Prof. Acar continued his words: “The dictionary contains around 60,000 items. Starting from the 14th century, the study encompassed the standard Turkey Turkish until the end of the 20th century and the Old Anatolian and Rumelia Turkic. The dictionary also contains some books published in Greek and Armenian letters in the 19th century and words and slang in dialect texts collected in Anatolia and Rumelia in the 20th century. Tietze included all the words and examples used in Turkey Turkish in the dictionary without distinction between old-new and origin.”
Saying that completing and publishing this work of Prof. Tietze, who lived in Turkey from 1937 to 1958 and was also an academician at Istanbul University, is an important contribution and honorable task to Turkish science and culture, Prof. Acar stated that we aim to complete the dictionary by the end of 2018 based on the original drafts and materials from Tietze. In addition, Prof. Acar expressed his gratitude to the Tietze family, Prof. Tezcan and his team, and other people and institutions for their contribution.
