AASSA General Assembly Meeting & International Symposium on “Refugees and Migrants” was Held in Turkey Hosted by TÜBA

TÜBA and The Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA) – with the contributions of the Inter Academy Partnership (IAP) – organized AASSA General Assembly Meeting and the International Symposium on “Refugees and Migrants: A Global Problem or an Asset”.

Professor Acar said “Immigration, immigrant and refugee issues are among the topics of importance and priority. Today, it is possible to say that the forced displacement of people can be accepted as a social and humanity catastrophe. Therefore, AASSA International Symposium discuss this issue at the correct time. Turkey that host the most refuges in the world is the most suitable country to speak and solve this issue. He also added that the symposium provides a better understanding of the problem and will contribute to the fight with this problem.
AASSA President Professor Krishan Lal congratulated the TÜBA for the successful meeting organized in a short time. He said this organization is special because there is not only a general assembly but also an international symposium. He also emphasized other cooperation issues. TÜBA Vice-President Professor Ahmet Nuri Yurdusev, introduced the symposium stated that the immigration and refugees issue is not only a current issue but also it has a historical aspect. TÜBA Member Professor Tayfun Özçelik presentation on “Hereditary Long Journey of Human Migration” has attracted great interest.
There were four panels on the issues Migration in History, Society and Law, Migration and Health Issues, Syrian Refugees and the Middle East and Migration and Refugee Policies in Turkey and Europe. After the panels the participators of symposium separated two different working group as (1) Issues and problems of the migrants and refugees, (2) Migration in human history and society: Pros and cons and evaluated the symposium.
The symposium ended with the trip to Konya and Cappadocia organized by TÜBA.
