In view of the strategic importance of research on stem cells, TÜBA founded a working group (WG) open to the participation of all related scientists, in 2005.
The aim of this working group is to collect the latest knowledge on scientific developments as well as information on legal, ethical and bureaucratic rules in national and international stem cell research and its applications. The Stem Cell WG strives to: involve all related researchers from various disciplines to share knowledge and experience, and through cooperation with similar national and international groups, to prepare an interactive environment which enhances research projects, to organize educational activities and to prepare publications.
The TÜBA Stem Cell WG, led by Academy Member Prof. Dr. Emin Kansu, is composed of the following members: Prof. Dr. Okan Akhan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mutlu Arat, Prof. Dr. Meral Beksaç, Prof. Dr. Turgay Dalkara, Prof. Dr. Yaşar Murat Elçin, Prof. Dr. Dicle Güç, Prof. Dr. Yücel Kanpolat, Prof. Dr. Işınsu Kuzu, Prof. Dr. Tayfun Özçelik, Prof. Dr. Meral Özgüç, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Öztürk, Prof. Dr. Şevket Ruacan, Prof. Dr. Aslıhan Tolun and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Duygu Uçkan.
The WG published a report entitled “Current Concepts in Stem Cell Research” collecting scientific developments on the subject in order to enlighten related scientists and the public. In this report, scientific, bioethical, economic, legal and medical aspects of stem cell research, its application principles and regulations are discussed with a view to accomplish a comprehensive change in legislation.
This WG of the Academy has been organizing yearly scientific symposiums since 2005 on “Stem Cell Biology and Clinical Applications” in order to establish a common discussion/research platform with the participation of national and international scientists, and inform the public on the subject. The fourth symposium in this series will be held on 19 September 2008 at the Concert Hall of Bilkent University.
