Membership of the Turkish Academy of Sciences
A Principal Member is elected from among distinguished scientists of Turkish nationality. The conditions for being elected are stipulated thus: "to have received awards or medals from respectable national or international institutions; to have discoveries, inventions, theories and models named after himself or herself, and/or to have been cited in textbooks or review articles and to have a high number of generally accepted cited references in international science citation indices". Principal Membership continues until the age of 67. Persons whose memberships expire due to the age limit automatically become honorary members.
Associate Members are elected for a period of three years from among talented young scientists of Turkish nationality. They are among candidates to become Principal Members. The maximum length of time for Associate Membership is nine years.
Principal and Honorary Memberships are lifelong. Thus, in an environment where positions are limited to a few years, continuity is guaranteed for long-term research work which has been initiated and for the institutional memory of the Academy.
TÜBA has, now 200 "members" elected and approved by the General Assembly, upon the proposal of the Council. Principal members are expected to be distinguished scientists of international prominence. Principal membership turns into Honorary membership at the age of 67. Young talented scientists of Turkish nationality are elected for a period of three years as Associate members. Associate membership can be extended twice to a maximum length of nine years. They are among candidates to become Principal members.
